Technical Glossary: CTerm Index
CacheTemporary Storage. When your web browser downloads a web page, it will store it in your browser's cache so that it can save time by not downloading that page again. CGICommon Gateway Interface. CGI is a way to allow the creation of dynamic content on the web (and for a long time, then only way). These programs are often referred to as "CGI Scripts" which are usually scripts (Perl, VB, Awk, etc) or Programs (C and Pascal) located on a web server that would process requests from a user (usually from an HTML form). The CGI script would then output a web page to the browser with the dynamically generated content. ChatChat allows people to type messages to each other in a near-real-time fashion. Some chat rooms require a special software program called an IRC client. Others can run as a Java applet in your web browser (thus, you don't have to download another software program). Click through ratePercentage of users who click on an advertisement. Used to determine effectiveness of commercial Ads on web sites. Clickable ImageIn image on a web page that you click on and the page will take you to another document. This is like Hypertext, but with images instead of text. Images with more than one clickable area are called Image Maps. Client(1)The computer that requests information from a server or host computer. (2)On the web, also know as the web browser. Client ErrorsErrors that occur from invalid request from a web browser -- usually from bad links or misspelled addresses. A popular example is the HTTP 404 Error (page not found). Most client errors are in the HTTP 400 range. Computer VirusA small program written to do damage to a computer system. Usually, these programs attach themselves on other programs and are activated each time the host file is accessed. This, in turn, allows the virus to infect other files -- spreading like a normal virus would in a human. While some viruses only infect files, most have a specific purpose -- to destroy information on a computer system. Some viruses delete special system files and render the system unusable while others wait for a special date ("time-bomb" viruses) and format the computer harddisk. Special softare called Anti-virus software can help find these destructive programs before they delete something you wanted to keep. CookiesA small piece of information set by a web site so it can remember you. For more information on cookies, see the Cookies FAQs. CyberspaceTerm used to describe "space" or resources on a computer network -- like the Internet.
