Electronic Mail. Messages that are sent using computer networks or over the Internet. With Internet E-mail, a person can send another person a message to the other side of the world within a few seconds. E-mail, along with the World Wide Web, are the two major services offered on the Internet. E-mail was also one of the first services developed and used on the Internet and the major reason for the overall success of the Internet.
E-mail Address
The address or location of a person's electronic mailbox. On the Internet, the pattern usually follows: username@isp-domain. For example: jwatts@ala.net is the E-mail address for Jennifer Watts at AlaNet.
Emoticons
Sequence of characters (letters, numbers, and symbols) that express or represent emotions in e-mail message, newsgroup postings, and most of all, chat rooms.
Examples:
:-) is a smiley face
:-( is a sad face
;-) is a wink
There are dozens of these emoticons and several variations of each emotion.
Executable File
A file that contains instructions for a software program. Most programs are compiled and stored in a binary file while others are simply a collection (or batch) of system commands that are stored in a batch file or script file. In DOS and Windows, most compiled programs usually have the file extension .exe or .com and batch files have the extension .bat. In Unix, compiled programs and scripts can have any name.
External Viewer
A program that extends the native abilities of the web browser. This viewer "helps" display special content that the browser would not otherwise understand. For example, RealAudio Player "helps" the web browser present RealAudio content.
