Technical Glossary: FTerm IndexFAQFrequently Asked Questions. A collection of the most common questions asked about a particular product, service, or idea all assembled in a central location (often on one page) along with their answers. FirewallA security feature or software that restricts the flow of information from the internal network of a company to the Internet and vice versa. This is mainly to prevent the invasion of hackers via the Internet to the sensitive information on the local network of a company. Flame WarThe exchange of hateful/instulting e-mail messages. The best way to start a flame war, is to send someone spam (not the canned meat). FlamingThe act of sending hateful e-mail or any e-mail message containing insults. It is called "Flaming" because it files-up people's emotions (usually in a rather negative way). Floppy DiskA disk that is used to store and maintain files not stored on the computer's harddisk. Floppy disks are often used to backup important data files. However, the major draw back of floppy disks is the low data capacity (currently only 1.44 Megabytes) which makes any large scale backups or storing large files impossible or a major hassle. Floppy disks are also called diskettes. FormA form is a web page that contains input fields for the user to fill in (asking various info like name, address, phone, number, favorite color, etc) and then submit to a CGI script for processing (which usually e-mails the contents to the webmaster). FreewareSoftware that is completely free to use and aquire. However, many software authors have placed special conditions on freeware usage. For example, many freeware products can not be used for commercial purposes or sold with other products. FTPFile Transfer Protocol. A service that is used for transferring files from one computer to another over the Internet.
