Icon

A small graphic or image that represents a function, menu item, link to another document, or program. For example, an image of paper and a pen could represent a word processor program. Also, on a web page, a symbol of a speaker could mean linked sound/audio file.

An image with more than one clickable areas linked to other web pages. These areas are called hotspots.

IMHO

In My Humble Opinion. An abbreviation used in e-mail message, newsgroup postings, and chat rooms. Used when people want to express an opinion that maybe controversial without offending everyone on the network (doesn't always work, but it is better than nothing -- IMHO).

Information Super Highway

It depends on who is using the term -- mostly just a computer related "buz word." Some people think that it is simply another name for the Internet and others say that it is a technology that has yet to be discovered -- but might include the Internet. If one had to choose a current technology and call it "The Information Super Highway" -- the Internet would be the best choice.

The world-wide collection of computers that are linked together.

Intranet

The application of Internet technology and protocols to a local business network. Intranets are good for providing specific information within an organizations using existing Internet technologies (web pages, search engines, web browsers, etc).

IP Address

Internet Protocol Address. Or IP Number. A system of four numbers (205.123.254.145) that uniquely identify a computer on a network -- especially the Internet. Every computer that is connected to the Internet must have an IP address or number so other computers know how to find it. Computers that are always connected to the Internet may also have a Domain Name that gives a "friendly" text address like: www.ala.net.

IRC

Internet Relay Chat. I special service of the Internet that allows users to type messages to each other in near-real-time. This service usually requires special IRC software and can be difficult to configure and use. If you can get the software to work right, IRC is usually highly addictive and enjoyable.

ISDN

Intergrated Services Digital Network. A service that transmitts information digitally over a standard phone line. Because the information is sent digitally, transmission speeds are faster than the normal analog transmissions of a modem. ISDN speeds vary greatly, but for most consumers (BRI) 128kbps (2, 64kbps channels) is available if your local phone company supports this service. The main disadvantages are that the service is not available everywhere and this service is much more expensive than standard phone service.

ISP

Internet Service Provider. A company that specialize in providing Dialup accounts to the Internet for local customers.
