WAN

Wide Area Network. A network of computers located in differnet buildings or cities that are connected to each other. WANS that span long distances usually employ the same technology used to connect companies to the Internet (ISDN, T1, T3, etc).

web browser

Software that allows a user to look at web pages.

Web Server

A computer that has special software and hardware to host web pages. The hardware keeps the computer connected to the Internt at all times and the software allows the computer to listen for web page requests.

Another abbreviation for the World Wide Web.

Webmaster

Person responsible for the content and administration of a web site. With sites that take more than one person to run, the Webmaster is the main technical contact for the web site and the focus of any comments on the web site's design or content.

Website

A collection of web pages and their related files on a web server. The first page of a website is referred to as the homepage. Websites usually (but not always) have some common information theme that runs through all the web pages on that site.

WinSock

Windows Sockets. A program that enables Windows-based programs to talk TCP/IP to the Internet.
