After clicking on the Mail Server item,
the Perfernces dialog should look like this.

How to fill out this page:

Type your AlaNet Username in the Mail server user name field.
Remember that your AlaNet username is the same user name you use to log on to the Internet.

Type mail.ala.net in the Outgoing mail server field.

Type mail.ala.net in the Incoming mail server field.
