Posting Personal Web Pages on AlaNet

Step 1

Get the right Software

So, you want to have your own web pages -- right? Well, before you can do anything, you will need the right software and hardware. Since you are probably looking at this page online -- you should have all the necessary hardware (ie. computer with a modem and connect to the Internet) -- which leave the software part. The software you need is called an FTP client (File Transfer Protocol). There are several on the market and most of them you can download from the Internet.

Here are some popular FTP clients available:

Both of these FTP clients are nice, easy-to-use, graphical programs and both are available for download (shareware, evaluation). There are hundreds of other FTP clients people have created, you can view a list from Download.Com or WinFiles.

However, if you want to save some money and don't mind going without the graphical user interface, then Windows 95 has a command-line driven FTP client that can do the trick.

You need to create the pages you wish to use on your web site. This is beyond the scope of this tutorial. You can use FrontPage Express or Netscape Composer to do most web page design work.
